Potassium Bicarb Crystals

Did you know that potassium & sodium bicarbonates are the primary non-toxic alkalizing agents in the prevention and treatment of all cancers, Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes, heart, kidney, lung & liver disease, Pharmacological poisoning, lactic acid build up and hyponatremia or low salt or loss of salts due to extreme exercise? All this and more is reported in the International Journal of Complementary & Alternative Medicine.

Potassium bicarbonate and Sodium bicarbonate are key components of your body’s acid/alkaline balance.

Potassium is such an important nutrient and electrolyte that without enough of it we have low stamina, feel weak and are easily fatigued. Our muscles cannot contract properly, they become weak and flaccid – this includes one of our most important muscles – the HEART!

Potassium deficiency, known as hypokalemia, can produce an array of symptoms, which vary in severity depending on the degree of deficiency. Medical science has known for some time that potassium deficiency causes a suppression of growth hormones but it is also linked to high blood pressure, weak muscles and cramping, feeling faint or dizzy, abdominal cramping, nerve issues (pins and needles).

You don’t hear much about potassium - but you should. It’s important for muscle strength, nerve functioning, and a healthy cardiovascular system, says nutritionist, Janet Brill, Ph.D., R.D.

Potassium is available in lots of delicious foods (beans, dark leafy greens, potatoes, squash, yogurt, fish, avocados, mushrooms, and bananas). However, even if you are eating the recommended 4,700 mg per day, you still might have a deficiency – especially if you love salt!

Sodium/Potassium Connection

Of all the disruptive changes that have occurred in the human diet since the advent of food processing, the change in the sodium/potassium ratio is among the most dramatic. Our ancestor’s diet is shown to have contained 16 times more potassium than sodium (this makes sense given that unprocessed meat and plant foods contain between 10-20 times as much potassium as sodium).

On average, people’s daily intake of potassium is only 1/3 the suggested required amount.

Consider that most refined carbohydrate/sugar-based foods contain substantially more sodium than potassium. This drastic reversal of the sodium/potassium ratio is likely a significant factor in the coronary heart problems and declining levels of growth hormone.

The more sodium you consume, the more potassium your body excretes.

Most potassium supplements are very acidic, such as potassium chloride, which can be hard on the kidneys. Whereas in the dietary form, potassium bicarbonate (naturally found in vegetables and fruits), is more alkaline and can reduce overall body acidity.

Supplementing with Potassium Bicarbonate is an excellent way to counter the negative effects of a diet that is too acidic.

98% of this essential mineral is found inside the cells. That’s why it’s important to get

potassium in the form that can travel into cells before being expelled by the body. Potassium bicarbonate is in the perfect elemental form that is easily absorbed into the cell.

Dr. Otto Warburg is now famous for his statement, “No disease, including cancer, can exist in an alkaline environment.”

Natural health practitioners understand that disease thrives in an acidic body. One of the fundamental approaches to health and healing has to be the alkalization of the body so it can dispose acids from our cells tissues, and organs.

Bicarbonate is a major element present in all body fluids and organs in our body. Secreted by the stomach, it is necessary for digestion. When ingested, for example, in water, it helps buffer lactic acid generated during exercise and also reduces the acidity of dietary  components. It even has a prevention effect on dental cavities.

Potassium Bicarbonate And Your Teeth

Bicarbonate has been shown to decrease dental plaque acidity created by sugars which is important to prevent dental cavities. Other studies have shown that bicarbonate inhibits plaque formation on teeth and increases calcium uptake by dental enamel. This effect of  bicarbonate on teeth is so well recognized that bicarbonate containing tooth powder was patented in the USA in October 1985. Potassium bicarbonate can increase the pH in the oral cavity to neutralize the harmful effects of bacterial metabolic acids.

Potassium Reduces Blood Pressure

Adequate intake for potassium as set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine is 4700mg/day. These trials were based on the base required amount necessary to reduce blood pressure. Dr Mark Houston, director of the Hypertension Institute in Tennessee, says if individuals increased their potassium intake to recommended levels, hypertension among adults could be reduced by 10%, adding that he even advocates for getting 5,000 mg/day.

Dr Eric Berg is another of the strong medical

advocate for choosing potassium over heart medications.

Potassium contains a positive electrical charge and works closely with chloride (salt) in regulating blood pressure and pH balance. Potassium is necessary for the heart, kidneys, and other organs to work normally. Potassium allows our muscles to move, our nerves to fire, and our kidneys to filter blood. The right balance of potassium literally allows the heart to beat.

Blood pressure medications can lead to diabetes. The use of thiazide diuretics are widely considered the preferred initial pharmacological treatment for hypertension. These drugs  have a common side effect of lowering serum potassium and evidence shows that diuretic- induced hypokalemia (potassium deficiency) may lead to glucose intolerance. When patients with thiazide-induced hypokalemia are given potassium supplements, glucose loads are corrected, this indicates that potassium deficiency can indeed be a direct contributing factor  to the blood sugar abnormality. Investigators also found that those with the lowest potassium intake were significantly more likely to develop diabetes than those who consumed even a small amount 3393mg/day!

Potassium Helps Keeps You Hydrated

You may be drinking a lot of water and are still not properly hydrating your cells. If you are consuming more salt than potassium, the water you drink is more likely to be outside the cell (extracellular) rather than inside the cell (intracellular). Good health depends on hydration; cells swelling and shrinking. An increase in cellular hydration (swelling) produces a positive stimulus, whereas a decrease in cellular hydration (shrinkage) acts as a negative stimulus.

Fluid is constantly moving in and out of the cell – moving nutrients in and toxins out across an electrical gradient bisected benefits of cellular hydration by the cell membrane. The key to obtaining the positive is to maximize intracellular fluid. Potassium draws fluid inside the cell. By increasing your potassium intake an reducing your sodium intake, you can shift water from the extracellular matrix of your body into the cells where it is needed most.

Drinking water will improve your overall hydration status, but it will not significantly alter the ratio of intracellular to extracellular fluid. This is largely dependent on the ratio of potassium/sodium.

Proper hydration requires electrolytes - These are the substances that produce an electrically conducting solution when dissolved in water. In our bodies, electrolytes include potassium (K+), sodium (Na+), calcium (Ca2+), bicarbonate (HCO3-), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride  (C1-), and hydrogen phosphate (HPO42-).

Our muscles and neurons are sometimes referred to as the "electric tissues" of the body. They are reliant on electrolyte movement between extracellular, interstitial and intracellular fluid (fluid inside, outside or between cells).

Resolve Uric Acid & Dissolve Kidney Stones

A clinical trial showed that supplementing with potassium bicarbonate in water, along with dietary changes was enough to reduce uric acid and dissolve uric acid kidney stones. This eliminated the need for surgery. Potassium bicarbonate is highly alkaline in nature, making it an excellent choice for neutralizing excess acid conditions.

Potassium bicarbonate supplementation eliminated the need for kidney stone surgery.

Potassium Deficiency & Depression

Low potassium levels have been associated with increased risk for mood disturbances and depression. A study published in British Journal of Nutrition 2008, examined the relationship between potassium and mood. They found that a high-potassium diet helped to relieve symptoms of depression and tension among study subjects. These findings suggest both that potassium may be useful in the treatment of mood disturbances and that low potassium levels may be linked to symptoms of depression.

Are You Getting Enough Potassium?

Obviously a diet that is low in raw vegetables, fruits and nuts (cooking will leach out vitamins and minerals) cannot provide the body the essential potassium it requires. If you are also a soda pop drinker then beware!

One of the biggest causes of potassium deficiency is consumption of cola drinks.

In addition, certain medications such as diuretics, laxatives, aspirin, some types of antibiotics, blood pressure lowering drugs, bronchodilators, and steroids deplete potassium levels. Potassium deficiency can also be caused by bulimia, chronic diarrhea and Crohn’s disease.

“Though potassium bicarbonate supplements may produce side effects, they are usually rare. Most medical sites recommend you consult your doctor before starting potassium supplementation but doctors rarely understand or recommend that patients supplement with the basic minerals of life. Though sodium bicarbonate is found in every pharmacy, potassium bicarbonate is not.” - Dr Sircus
