A systematic review and meta-analysis examining magnesium supplementation in older adults with insomnia found that participants receiving magnesium fell asleep approximately 17 minutes faster than those receiving placebo across the included trials.
The earlier clinical trial involving older adults with primary insomnia also reported improvements in measures including sleep time and sleep efficiency following magnesium supplementation.
More recently, a 2025 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined magnesium bisglycinate in 155 adults reporting poor sleep.
After four weeks, participants receiving 250 mg of elemental magnesium as magnesium bisglycinate experienced a greater improvement in insomnia severity scores than those receiving placebo.
The researchers also found an interesting pattern when they looked at participants' magnesium intake. Those beginning the study with lower dietary magnesium intake appeared to experience greater improvements.
This adds to a broader question in nutritional research: how much does a person's starting nutritional status influence the response to supplementation?
It is one of several areas where further magnesium and sleep research will be worth watching.
Taken together, the research supports continued interest in magnesium as an important nutrient within the sleep conversation.
Does the Type of Magnesium Matter?

The research tells a broader story.
Magnesium exists in a variety of compounds, including magnesium chloride, citrate, oxide, glycinate and others. These forms differ in their chemical structure, how they are used and the amount of elemental magnesium they provide.
Magnesium bisglycinate certainly deserves interest. The 2025 clinical trial provides contemporary human evidence supporting further investigation of this form for sleep.
But sleep research has not established one magnesium form as the universal choice for every person or every purpose.
