Iodine - The Misunderstood Nutrient
Share
Did you know that iodine is historically considered the Universal Medicine because this nutrient acts as a natural “antibiotic”?
Unlike an antibiotic however, it will not destroy healthy bacteria and in fact supports and benefits your entire microbiome. Also of key importance is how essential it is to our brain! If you want to stay sharp and smart take your Nascent Iodine drops daily.
Iodine is the most misunderstood nutrient. After 12 years of practicing medicine, I can say that it is impossible to achieve your optimal health if you do not have adequate iodine levels. I have yet to see any item that is more important for promoting health than iodine.- Dr. David Brownstein
Iodine Deficiency – A Worldwide Epidemic
Normally iodine is found as 2 molecules of iodine paired (stuck) together and this is called “I2”. This form of iodine is difficult for the body to process and use correctly. As a result doctors in that past have used potassium iodide in combination with I2 to supplement iodine with some success.
In fact iodized salt is table salt in which potassium iodide is added in small amounts.
The problem with potassium iodide is that it can cause an inflammation in the thyroid known as thyroiditis.
Many doctors are reluctant to supplement with iodine due to this risk. It is however clear to all doctors that there is an epidemic of iodine deficiency throughout the world and infact iodine deficiency is the leading cause of mental retardation in the world.
America is no exception regarding iodine deficiency. Many Americans avoid salt or are using natural salts that do not contain extra iodine. The soils in which plants are grown are deficient in iodine leaving our foods depleted in this essential nutrient.
What is Iodine?
Not all Iodine is the same, throughout this article we will be referring to Nascent Iodine
Iodine is a trace element that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Thyroid hormones regulate many important biochemical reactions, including protein synthesis and enzymatic activity, and are critical determinants of metabolic activity. They are also required for proper skeletal and central nervous system development in fetuses and infants. Because the body does not make this mineral, it can benefit from the iodine effects that come with taking Miracle Products Nascent Iodine.
Iodine deficiency prevention begins with ensuring you take the proper amount of iodine each day. The thyroid gland needs iodine to make hormones. If the thyroid doesn’t have enough iodine to do its job, feedback systems in the body cause the thyroid to work harder. This can cause an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), which becomes evident as a swollen neck. Other consequences of not having enough iodine (iodine deficiency) are also serious. Iodine deficiency and the resulting low levels of thyroid hormone can cause women to stop ovulating, leading to infertility.
Iodine deficiency can also lead to an autoimmune disease of the thyroid and may increase the risk of getting thyroid cancer.
Some researchers think that iodine deficiency might also increase the risk of other cancers such as prostate, breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancer.
What is Iodide?
Iodide is the ion form of iodine, occurring when iodine bonds with another element, such as potassium. Dietary iodine also occurs naturally as an iodide, such as potassium iodide or sodium iodide, (the kind typically placed into salt).
According to Dr. David Brownstein, author of Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It, iodide, as a salt, is not a very efficient way of getting iodine into the body. Brownstein referenced a study in which he stated that consuming milk and bread (with iodide in it) was a far superior way of getting iodine into the body, than iodide in salt.
- Iodine is the element found on the periodic chart. However, the molecular form, which consists of two atoms of iodine stuck together, is not found in nature.
- Iodide is the salt, which could for example, be iodine combined with calcium or potassium, and can be found in seaweed sources and mineral deposits.
Current information regarding the nutritional facts about iodine can be found in the National Institute of Health Iodine Fact Sheet, online at https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Iodine-Consumer.

Iodine deficiency can cause breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid cancer, and lung cancer.
Lack of iodine could also affect your I.Q. as much as 15 points!
Iodine deficiency we get is partly a result of toxicity from Fluoride and Bromine.
Bread has ten times more Bromine in it than it used to and the sources of Fluorine are nearly ubiquitous today. So who does not need Iodine? I find that nearly everyone needs more than they are getting. – Dr. Garry F. Gordon
Iodine is utilized by every hormone receptor in the body. The absence of iodine causes a hormonal dysfunction that can be seen with practically every hormone inside the body. - Jorge Flechas, M.D
If there is enough inorganic, non-radioactive iodine in our bodies, the radioactive fallout has nowhere to bind in our bodies. It will pass through us, leaving our bodies unharmed. It is important to ensure that we have adequate iodine levels BEFORE this fallout hits. -Dr. David Brownstein.
The Health Benefits of Iodine:
- Preventing Iodine deficiency
- Preventing Radiation exposure
- Preventing & supporting the Thyroid
- Regulates hormones
- Increases metabolism
- Boosts energy levels
- Supports and maintains detoxification
- Supports immune system function
- Fights infections (natural antiseptic)
- Protects cells and tissues
- Supports brain function and increases IQ
- And MANY more healthy benefits!
Every Cell In the Body Contains and Utilises Iodine
Use by the Thyroid
The human thyroid has an iodine “trap” which captures iodides and holds them until they are converted into triiodothyronine (T3) and its prohormone, thyroxine (T4).
Iodine Is Natures Antibiotic
Iodine is by far the best antibiotic, antiviral and antiseptic of all time.– Dr. David Derry
Iodine is a Pillar against Infections!
No Virus, Bacteria Or Parasite Has Been Shown To Be Resistant To Iodine.
Iodine offers a serious and potent replacement for much of the antibiotics that are literally destroying people’s lives and can be used safely with children. Parents, who chose not to dose their kids with dangerous vaccines will be glad to know that iodine can be very effective against a host of viral infections that medical officials insist threaten children. Nature and evolution have given us an important nutrient to control pathogenic life forms and we should use it and trust it to protect us in ways that antibiotics can’t. – Dr. Mark A. Sircus AC., OMD, DM
Iodine has many positive therapeutic actions. It is a potent anti-infective agent. No virus, bacteria or parasite has been shown to be resistant to iodine therapy. – Dr. Brownstein.
After we understand that iodine is an excellent antiviral, antibacterial, anti fungal, mold and yeast agent we begin to glimpse the catastrophic mistake made for substituting pharmaceutical antibiotics for iodine. Antibiotics do not kill yeast but they certainly can kill people on occasion. Not only do some antibiotics increase the risk of sudden cardiac death but sometimes they lead to liver compromise and failure. Despite the ever-widening use of antibiotics the National Center for Infectious Disease and the Centers for Disease Control announced that the U.S. death rate from infectious disease increased by more than 50% between 1980 and 1992, making it the third leading cause of death. – Dr. Mark Sircus
Though it kills 90 percent of bacteria on the skin within 90 seconds its use as an antibiotic has been ignored. Iodine exhibits activity against bacteria, molds, yeasts, protozoa, and many viruses; indeed, of all antiseptic preparations suitable for direct use on humans and animals and upon tissues, only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa. Most bacteria are killed within 15 to 30 seconds of contact. Iodine is by far the best antibiotic, antiviral and antiseptic of all time. – Dr. David Derry Dr. Derry
He goes on to say that iodine is effective “for standard pathogens such as Staphylococcus, but also iodine has the broadest range of action, fewest side effects and no development of bacterial resistance. – Dr. David Derry Dr. Derry
There is a world of difference between using an antibiotic – anti-life substance – and a antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal substance like iodine, which is life serving because it is a basic and most necessary nutritional substance.– Dr. Mark Sircus
Malaria:
I talked a few months ago to a missionary in Africa who was using iodine (in the atomic or detoxified form) to successfully treat malaria. My own children have recently had bad coughs and it is iodine, not dangerous over-the-counter cough medicines I reach for.” – Dr. Mark Sircus“There is a world of difference between using an antibiotic (literally an anti-life substance) and an antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal substance like iodine, which is life serving because it is a basic and most necessary nutritional substance. – Dr. Mark Sircus
Syphilis, Skin Lesions, and Chronic Lung Disease:
At 6 grams daily iodine has been used to cure syphilis, skin lesions, and chronic lung disease. From a larger physiological perspective, it is important to realize that the thyroid is only one gland of many glands and tissues that needs iodine. Other glands/organs/systems with high iodine uptake are the breasts, ovaries, cervix, blood, lymph, bones, gastric mucosal, salivary, adrenal, prostate, colon, thymus, lungs, bladder, kidney, and skin. Iodine is found and used in every hormonal receptor in the body. – says Dr. Gabriel Cousens
Cancer:
Dr. Brownstein says, The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer sometime during her life is now one in seven. The single most important nutrient to halt this progression is iodine. Inadequate breast iodine levels have been associated with the development of breast cancer in both animals and humans, while iodine supplementation has been shown to cause cancer cells to shift into apoptosis or programmed cell death. I have no doubt one of the reasons we are seeing such an epidemic of breast cancer is due to iodine deficiency.
Brownstein has tested almost five thousand of his patients in his practice, and found the vast majority, over 95 percent, to be deficient in this essential mineral.

Is There Enough Iodine In Our Salt?
Dr. David Brownstein states, Nobody makes a distinction between unrefined and refined salt. They ‘lump’ all salt together as a bad substance. This is a terrible mistake. There are two forms of salt available in the market place: refined and unrefined. Refined salt has had its minerals removed and has been bleached to give it the white appearance that we are accustomed to seeing with salt. It is the fine, white salt that is available at almost any restaurant or grocery store. Refined salt has been bleached and exposed to many toxic chemicals in order to get it to its final product. It has aluminum, ferrocyanide, and bleach in it. I believe this refining process has made it a toxic, devitalized substance that needs to be avoided.
Brownstein continues, Unrefined salt, on the other hand has not been put through a harsh chemical process. It contains the natural minerals that were originally part of the product. Its mineral content gives it a distinct color. The colors of unrefined salt can vary depending on where it is taken from. This is due to the changing mineral content of the various brands of salt. It is the minerals in unrefined salt that provide all the benefits of this product. The minerals supply the body with over 80 trace elements needed to maintain and sustain health. Furthermore, the minerals elevate the pH (correct acidity) and lower blood pressure. Our maker gave us salt to use in our diet—unrefined salt—with its full complement of minerals. It should be the salt of choice. It is a vital ingredient that needs to be part of everyone’s diet.
